The Importance Of A Voice Talent Coach

By Harold Parker

When it comes to working in radio, film and television, there are often many opportunities. For example, one can become an actor involved in film and stage productions. Whereas, others such as those working as voice talent artists prefer to be in the background.

In some cases, individuals can complete paid or free webinars and workshops which include training in the industry. Whether learning from a vocal coach, or attending professional classroom or online training, there is often a great deal of upfront costs involved. For, most often the individual will need to pay for a production studio, training and marketing materials.

Once having located a qualified coach, it is important to follow all advice and instructions. For, these individuals often have better insight into what directors are looking for than others. It is also important that those seeking a coach know what area of vocal work one is most interested in becoming involved.

When it comes to vocal acting, an artist can focus on a specific art form or multiple ones. As such, when looking at various training programs, it is often good to know which one is best suited towards a specific goal. While there are specialized and generalized areas of training in the field, most often artists pick at least one primary area of focus, even if working on other projects and styles from time to time.

Individuals whom are serious about working in the area often need to purchase a home studio, pay for training sessions and marketing materials. As such, while it can be gratifying to eventually make money in the industry, there are also a lot of upfront costs. While this is the case, those doing so can often make more money than someone simply trying to record sessions on a desktop, laptop or tablet.

The industry is also a volatile one, especially for those whom are easily offended. For, while there may a number of revisions required during the course of a project, artists can not take the revisions personally or as a reflection of the quality of work. There are often times when scripts are revised, thus needing revision of previous vocal tracks. If a director, writer or project manager does return work based on quality issues, it is important to acknowledge how the work can be made better in the future.

The best voice artists are self-dedicated, self-sufficient and pay attention to detail. In addition, it is imperative that projects be submitted to a director, writer or project manager by the date requested. After which, there may be several rounds of revisions required, whether these are changes to a script, or a change in the quality of the vocal recordings.

Most often, those working in this area enjoy the work and are often successful. Although, there are also individuals who are just not cut out to be vocal artists. While this is the case, it is often possible to direct these individuals into other areas in which any proven talents may be better suited. For example, one may not have the voice necessary to be an audio artist, though could very well be good at directing, reviewing or writing commercials or other content.
